Local Government is the Government level closest to the people.

Mrs Paula Clarke, Shire of Yarriambiack's Manager of Community Services, spoke of the role of local government in small, isolated rural communities.

She pointed out to the students the nature of our isolation - each resident has 8700 square meters for themselves. That is just under one square kilometer per person. That is very empty.

All citizens over 18 vote and the shire rasies $A13 million per year. There are 5500 ks of roads - bitumen, gravel and dirt. The shire maintains footpaths, town beautification, the round abouts in Scott St, cost $A79,000 each. The shire maintains libraries, parks and gardens, museums etc.

The services provided include: recycling, fire prevention, wood collection licences, saleyards, tidy towns, caravan parks, swimming pools, citizenship ceremonies, industrial estates, aerodromes (we have two and they are essential for the air ambulance), youth worker, environmental health officer etc.

Mrs Clarke told the class that there are 1900 registered dogs in the shire, along with 700 registered cats.

Jobs available in Local Government include: receptionist, ranger, librarian, rate collector, engineers, design engineer, nurses, teachers, home help workers, handy man, accountant, work and road crews, grader operators, youth worker etc. The shire employs 130 staff.
