Mr Murray, speaing to year 9, stated how important tourism is to Australia. 10% of Australians are employed directly or indirectly, in Tourism. (6% directly)/ It is worth $A70bn or $US40bn. We have 4 million overseas vistors each year, who stay for about 27 nights. Most come from our neighbours in Asia.
Day trippers alone, spend $51bn of that sum.
90% of tourism concerns employ less than 20 people - there are 350,000 turism businesses in Australia.
Tourism makes up 11% of all Australia's exports.
Mr Murray went through the stages to establishing a tourism project.
1. identify project. (our students will need to be quick here)
2. consider infratructure - buildings, fences, safety issues, ease of access, other nearby attractions and don't ignore the obvious - farming is a novelty to many.
3. people involved
4. Insurance - a key issue in Australia which is forcing many extreme and dangerous projects to close.
5. support - neighbours and the authorities.
6. once operating - the need to maintain and train taff, the vital importance of communications skills. Accurate record keeping.
7. marketing and advertising.
8. sustainability.
